Cat(Putz) + Fred + In2Cat & Co
What you need to start
Maus or Internet
There are two ways how Cat can exchange its messages. Originally Cat was written for the Maus-Net, a BBS-System in Germany and Austria. Now it can also access the internet (POP3, IMAP, SMTP and NNTP servers. According in how you want to get your messages you´ll need different programs.
M+ICat
The main program to write and read mails and news.
M
To communicate with a Maus you´ll need a terminal program. I don´t write any such program, but there are scripts with Cat for different terminal programs. Below I add links to different terminal programs
I
To exchange your Messages not by Maus but by Internet
( Pop3, IMAP, SMTP and NNTP) you need In2Cat instead of the terminal program
I
For the connection to the internet you´ll need a access program. In2Cat supports Iconnect an Sting/STick. See the links below. If you use MagicPC In2Cat can access the internet directly through the Windows sockets. So no further program is needed.
M+I
CatPutz (Cat Cleaner) is needed to clean a growing database.
X
Fred is an editor created out of the cat program. So it has nothing to do with mails or news.
Cat&Co: Current sources
The distribution of the Cat and In2Cat source files has been changed to a CVS system. By now I wrote a  german explanation of how to access the CVS using wincvs under Windows and some more Information and links to programs under MiNt and MAC OS. Or you can access the sources here , and here is the version from 7.may.05
If you want to read more about cvs try this

Terminal programs: one of these will be needed to communicate with a Maus
Internet connection software: one of them will be needed to communicate with the internet, except under MagicPC. Iconnect is part of the CAB-package. MagiCNet and MiNT-Net can also be used, but then you also need GlueSTiK. I only tested Iconnect and MagicPC.
CAT’s-eye by Ulli Gruszka: It can help CAT to display HTML parts of mails, and it can signal the presence of selected words
Gemjing by Götz Hoffart: This program can play sound files, and can be used by CAT as sound generator.
Many IO-filters collected by Harald Placke

HTML2Txt:
A program to convert html into normal text. Adapted by me to TOS. It is under the GPL and is used by Cat from 5.51 to generate an email text for pure HTML emails.
Cat icons to be used under windows.
